The story begins from the point of view of the dog. The nameless puppy constantly lives in fear of the family after being adopted by them. They constantly abuse the poor puppy and one fine day abandon him in the junkyard. The story now shifts to Patrick, our protagonist, who is travelling to his grandfather’s place with his mom. The boy comes across this nameless dog and instantly feels a connection. He decides to name the dog, Oz. Oz at first is very sad and wants to stay in his cage/ shelter. Patrick helps Oz be happy again and Oz does the same for Patrick when he needs it.
